Looking at Quincy’s schedule they havent played alot of teams with winning records. Effingham D needs to step it up one more time. If we can make it past this team theres good chance of making it to the semi finals
November 3rd, 2009 at 11:28 am
The same thing for scheduling could be said about Effingham as well Bigtime. Besides, once playoffs come around, everyone is 0-0 . Hopefully QND’s field is in pretty good shape. I dont want to have another game in 2 feet of mud like last week. I’m sure the game was exciting, but Id much rather see the quality of teams judged by ability, rather than holding onto the ball and keeping your footing in the mud
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:11 pm
Very true, but Quincy plays alot of Peoria teams which are not very good at football. Its going to be sunshine all week long so it should dry up the field. I took a look at the Quincy newspaper online and saw that they played in the mud like we did expect I don’t think it was as muddy as or field.
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:49 pm
I went to the Quincy-Harrisburg game and was in awe of QND. They have some real talent on both sides of the ball. The 42-0 score was not an indication of how bad it was. QND pulled their QB and Tailback in the 2nd quarter. They also played the 2nd string all the 2nd half. I think the score could have been 70-0. People keep saying that Peoria teams are weak but you have to realize that they are 5, 6, and 7A schools.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:21 pm
mmmm, well have to see what happens this Saturday. Maybe Harrisbur was not that good, who knows. Just looking at some of the past teams they have played, gives me reason that effingham could contend with this team. I am not a big fan of a private school, just for the simple fact that they get to recruite players, that being said Effingham has some of best talent I have seen in a while
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:48 pm
I do not have any allegiance to QND. I am originally from Effingham and now live in Quincy. This is a really good football team. Their first team defense has only given up 6 points all year. They have a very big and athletic offensive and defensive line. I don’t know much about Effingham but I would venture to say that they have not faced a team as good as QND this year.
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:09 pm
IC did you go to school at Effingham. I played all four years at Effingham high school. I don’t know if Effingham has played a team as tough as QND, but they have played some pretty good competition. They have played Breese,Mtz,Althoff. Well i hope you go to the game Saturday because i am going to be making a trip to Quincy. I am excited about this game these two teams have never played each other before and i think thats advantage for Effingham, but we will have to wait and see.
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:25 pm
I did not go to Effingham but still have relatives there.(Nisbet). I played football for 4 years and feel I know what the difference is between good and extra good and they are extra good. I will be at the game because my neighbor is a senior backup LB on the team. I will post on here and admit I was wrong if you don’t see it that way on Saturday.
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:39 pm
Cool, I am just happy that Effingham is not playing some local team down the road like they always do in the playoffs. I never been to Quincy so I am going to make the best of regardless of the outcome. I have been on google looking up directions. Is Quincy football field right by their school? What does their football field look like? Effinghams look like bull dozer went through it. I hope its dry all day Saturday. Who did you play football for?
November 3rd, 2009 at 6:49 pm
The field is right next to the high school. It is not the best field in the world. The soccer team plays on it to. It got ripped up the past two week. The visitors side is bad with bleachers scattered. If you come to Quincy get on I 72 as soon as possible (Decatur or Springfield) and then take I 172 North. This will make your trip much shorter. Be careful going through Pike County. It is the biggest deer county in Illinois and farmers are just getting in the field and stirring up deer. I played for Mendon Unity which is about 20 miles north of Quincy.
November 3rd, 2009 at 7:05 pm
what do you mean the bleachers are scattered? Explain?
November 3rd, 2009 at 7:18 pm
some at the 30 yard line, some at the 50 and some at the other 30, and then some visitor seats on the home side. QND doesn’t draw huge crowds due to the fact they have a small enrollment and are basically followed by the parents of the students and not the community.
November 4th, 2009 at 10:25 am
So what kind of team is Effingham going to see? Obviously by this point, all teams are good. What I’m wondering is does QND like to throw the ball around the field, or are they a run team? Is the defense better at stopping one than the other?
November 4th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
Spread offense. They can pass and run. Offensive Line is big and good. Led by D 1 recruit 6′ 2″ 275 lb Zach Reichert and 6′ 8″ 375 James Ascheman and 6′5″ 285 Matt Hugenberg. The problem with Quincy is they have only played their starters 2-4 quarter games so far. They are usually so far ahead after the 1st Quarter it becomes necessary to play the second team. If you look at Daniel Weiman’s yardage you have to realize he only played about 20 quarters. They run, pass, wildcat and run a very high tech offense with a lot of pulling and trap blocking. Defense is pretty stingy having given up 6 points all year. Other teams have scored but it was against the second and third string defense in the second half. Linebackers very quick to the ball and cornerbacks and safeties are fast.
November 4th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
Sounds like a handfull. Effingham runs the spread/no huddle/wing T/wild cat. I would say its probably the most complex offense in the apollo. 6′8 375 WOW!!!
Thats a big boy can he even move around. Effinghams got some hogs on the O Line averaging 260+. The biggest guy we have is 6′6 280 and he plays nose guard. Effingham shutout its first 5 oppents.
November 4th, 2009 at 5:25 pm
He didn’t even start last year due to the fact they had two D 1 Tackles. One at Eastern and the other at Western. He is pretty good and only plays offense. The one to watch though is Reichert, he is a ton and really moves people. I have seen only a couple of their games but saw enough to know they are good. I think if Effingham shows they can move the ball against QND and keeps it close they have a chance to wear them down. As I said they have not played more than two quarters only twice.
November 4th, 2009 at 6:37 pm
Effingham’s D is not the biggest, but they are built on speed not size. I hope there will be nice weather and a good football game. I hope you guys have all kinds of snacks to eat. As i always like to see what kind of different treats they have at games. WE have good pork burgers at Effingham.
November 4th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
Nice weather is predicted. There is Rib Eye sandwiches I think. I used to spend a weekend every fall at Lake Sara for a family reunion and it is beautiful. I also work with a Lady, Jill Lawrence, who is from Effingham.
November 5th, 2009 at 7:44 pm
I think Effingham’s coach said it best and said it better than I could. I have only seen them a couple of times but I agree with the following statement.
“They expect to win, and they expect to dominate,” said EHS coach Mike McDonald, who got a chance to see the Raiders in person as he traveled to Saturday’s win over Harrisburg.
“They’ve got real good size on the offensive line. They’re not flashy and there aren’t a lot of standouts, but they do it as a unit. On film, it’s hard to see any real weaknesses.”
November 6th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
Cants say I Know any of those people. If you think that lake Sara is Beautiful, you should come look at our sports complex at Effingham. I think if there was an award for best sports complex in Central Illinois it would go to Effingham. I think community spent something like 4-6 million dollars on it. So far its been perfect weather for football. Hope its a good game.
November 6th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
If you get here before 10 there will be a veterans parade down maine street and a c-130 flyover at 10:15 at 1000 ft. You won’t be impressed with QND’s field but pay attention to the house to the Northwest of the field. Some parents bought it a few years ago and use it so they can have parties and watch games and drink.
November 7th, 2009 at 10:22 am
Well here I come. I guess i better get out my Willie Nelson tapes and start playing on “on the raod again”
See you all there
November 7th, 2009 at 12:34 pm
No Love just reality. You will see. If I am wrong you can let me know it on here after the game. I graduated in 1980 and was an all conference quarterback and linebacker. Can you guess?
November 7th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
Well I am back home. What a drive that was. I think I would rather drive to Chicago then take that trip again. Neutral observer you were right.
. Effingham has nothing to be ashamed of. They came across a faster, bigger, strong team hands down. We had a couple of chances to score and least prevent the shutout. I hope that Effingham learns something from this because nobody in the apollo conference has played tougher schedule than Effingham did. I hope this loss will make us a better team. As for Quincy I don’t see anyone beating them. I think they will go all the way and win state.
November 7th, 2009 at 8:19 pm
I think they could be beat if they have to play 4 quarters. You could see the heat getting to them and not having enough close games.
November 7th, 2009 at 8:58 pm
neutral observer: Good call on QND. I’m embarrassed to say I don’t know who you are. I didn’t live in the Unity area yet in 1980. I lived in Quincy and was watching the Douglas brothers play basketball.
November 7th, 2009 at 9:01 pm
Well from what i saw, i think Quincy could beat anyteam in any circumstance. I don’t know who Quincy plays next in the third round. Effinghams onside kick real set the tone for Quincy. Not to be mean or disrespectful, but that has to be the worst sport facility i have ever seen. I didnt want to say anything to any of the Quincy fans when i was there. No Locker rooms, no water fountains, homemade field goal post, no stands for the vistors, the scoreboard is on the wrong side of the field. I hate to complain, but you would think with a great football program like that they could save up some money and try to fix up the place.
November 7th, 2009 at 9:24 pm
They used to play at a stadium in the middle of town but the College that owned it started a football program and wouldn’t let them use it so, they had to put the field together quick. It actually sits on the old city dump. I think it will become better as time goes on.
November 7th, 2009 at 9:44 pm
WOW!!! That doesnt sound safe. I cant believe they would build a field on a old city dump. what if a peace of glass or sharp metal object get dug up when they are playing.
November 7th, 2009 at 9:49 pm
I read where they actually had to add 6 feet of dirt because stuff started to work its way up. They have had no problems since. They play Rochester next week and I think they will have their hands full with Purdue bound QB Sean Robinson. I would bet he has not seen a defense this good yet though.
November 7th, 2009 at 10:31 pm
haha thats crazy!! I don’t think Quincy will have any problem with Rochester. Its Metamora that Quincy is going to have to worry about when they get to the semifinals. Effingham beat Breese and the only reason Breese got as far as they did in the playoffs is because they got the easiest part of the bracket
November 7th, 2009 at 11:21 pm
My observations on the game were that Effingham should have never tried the onside kick to start the game. To give an offense that kind of field position is crazy. They also should have passed more to the middle of the field. From the QND side I think I called it when I said that QND could be worn down. They played one half of a game and cashed it in. They play 1 half and coast the rest of the game. I would have kept going at least to get a running clock. Effingham was good but Quincy has so many horses up front that get a lot of push.
November 8th, 2009 at 1:37 am
Good season guys, youve got pleanty to be proud of. I think this will be the last year I take a lot of interest in, as these were they last guys I played with. I think next eyar will be the turn around year for the apollo, as both Effingham and MTZ bring back much of their teams. Robinson will finish making the transition to a competitive team, and will finish games. Charleston will be charleston, great athletically but undesciplned and a enigma. Time will tell for newton, but I see next year being much like robinson from this year. No clue on Salem or Olney, but I dont expect much from either
November 8th, 2009 at 7:40 am
Well apollo fan its been nice chating with you. Looks like I will be taking a break from these blogs and will be hitting the deer stand more now. I think Effingham has as good as chance of winning the apollo next year as they did this year. mtz will lose a handful as well as everyone else, but look for other teams to be knocking of mtz. I hope you still keep interested in Effingham football. For I have still been listening to the games since I graduated even my brother. Once a Heart always a Heart. There just nothing to better to me during the Autumn months to sit down turn on 97.9 and listen to the games. As for the undefeated team you played for I just want to say thank you. I know its been two years since it happens but its still fresh in everyones mind. I was lucky enough to go to those games that year and watch history. Probably one of the greatest Effingham teams I have ever seen. You guys shutup the “hey and no saysers”. Good luck to the Hearts next year
November 9th, 2009 at 8:57 am
Its pretty easy to have a nicer facility when your school is sucking off the taxpayers teat.
BTW, the scoreboard is on the perfect side of the field. As our guests, it would be impolite for us to force you to continue to look at the score as well as the beating you are taking on the field.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:30 am
You too Big Time. Its not that I’m not going to pay any attention anymore, but the guys on this team were the alst guys I played with, so itss kinda different. AS for the facilities, I wasn’t there, but dont come down on them too hard. Considering their circumstance of having to throw one together a few years ago, I think it can slide. That, and I know Effingham is spoiled with our facility. Its easily the best in the area.Feel free to donate, Yes, effingham has an outstanding facility, but a large part of that was covered by sponsorship and donations, and the cost was spread across all the sports fields (baseball, sorfball, track, tennis, and soccer) all use those facilities not just the fottball team
November 9th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
Feel free to donate- I think you took what i said wrong. I was talking with most of the Quincy fans about the field and the facility and they seemed upset that they couldnt honor a class act football team like Quincy with a great field. I was just trying to encourage Quincy fans thats all. I feel sorry for Quincy and I couldnt believe that you guys built a field on the city dump. It must be tough circumstances. As for the score board its nice not having to turn your head, but when the sun goes down the sun is right in your eyes and thats the first time i have ever seen a scoreboard like that. All I think Quincy is a great team and could possibly when state. I hope so that way I can say Effingham lost to the state champs
