Blow out BIG time for Illini West. These guys are monsters.

Illini West runs the wing-T and Monticello likes to throw it all over the field. The main storyline will be Cully Welter vs Jim Unruh from Carthage. Aledo had some great battles with Carthage when Welter was there. If Monticello gets the same production out of their quarterback, they could upset anybody.

Sorry Sages, I just don’t see anybody beating Illini West this year. I’m just glad they’re in 3A.

I was at the Illini West/Riverton game. I’ll say it right now, NOBODY is going to beat them. I’m not from either of these towns. They are the best 3A team I have seen in years. They are going to repeat. You 3A schools left in the playoffs better hope you don’t meet up with them.

I will say this… Carthage is a very strong team and has always had a great reputation, but If monticello can play with the hearts and minds they played with against St. T, they could make it interesting. I think Carthage will win, but Monticello could hopfully scare them a bit. Great year by the Sages. Go Sages, play with heart this weekend and you will win or loose as champions for the OKAW!

I agree, Monticeelo is playing a huge monster of a team but you never know. Bring your A game Sages!

Eveyone should know how good Carthage is and I think everyone does. One of the only thing Monticello has going for them is that they have kind of flown under the radar this season. They are pass happy but that could hurt you against a good defense. This gamw is at Carthage and the Sages have already exceeded expectations this season so they get beat pretty good here. Carthage 42-21.

I think everyone is right. Carthage looks to roll over Monticello. However, while I’m in Tolono, I will also be silently rooting for Monticello.

as lee corso would say…”not so fast my friend!” … a little history lesson…I went to the 2003 championship game…Carthages 2nd of three consecutive 2nd place finishes…and they lost to Iroquois west..my dads home town…my son and i told him..”no way the mighty Carthage gets beat!” Iroquois has had only 3 teams with 7 or more wins in 25 years…but that year they had a >>PASSER<<…who blew up Carthage for a still standing record of 381 yds in 18mph winds and snow flurries! Monticello.DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE! are they good yes…but you can win..dont let their reputation knock you out before the game is played!!

Carthage is a very strong team. Monticello will need to score on almost every possession, which is possible. If any coach can game plan to beat Carthage it is Welter.

Iroquois West got it going at the end of the year in 2003. They had lost to SJO that year by a running clock. Quite an amazing run to the title. Go Sages.

Don’t listen to the naysayers Monticello. Week 1 saw a #16 seed take down a #1. I’ll be listening for the results on the radio as I head home from a Trojan win over Bismarck. Go Sages!!

  17. jray says:

They don’t have to listen to them, but it’s true. Monticello has had a remarkable season, but it ends Saturday.

Its 11 on 11 and anything can happen, I would rather go for the bullzeye rather than be the target… Monticellos run game was great against St. T. they need to repeat and be 2 sided. Carthage is a big bodied team, bigger than most they have played against, but another thing Monticello has going for them is carthage runs the same offense as Camp point. So they have been practicing against it for two weeks. Come on Sages.

  19. Mike T. says:
    November 3rd, 2009 at 6:02 pm

Not being critical but lol, Monticello might need ‘at least’ 2 weeks to be ready. Afterall, didn’t Camp Point put 40 pts. on the board and now your playing a team that is better. Hopefully last weeks game was a tune up for this one. Good luck Sages!

No matter how good you are, you can be beaten. Watch out Carthage. Your winning streaks are over come Saturday. It’ll all be over but the crying. Am sending some tissues with the Sages to pass out for the Carthage team. GO SAGES!!! Show no mercy.

Yeah Camp Point put on 40 pts counting the touchdowns that were caught out of bounds. Hopefully the officials this coming Saturday has better eyes. However, I suppose Carthage will need all the help they can get. They need to bring their A+++ team. GO SAGES!!!!!!!!!

Sages Crusader- nice enthusiam, but all of Camp Point scores were rushing TDs. You may be thinking of the St. T game.

Monticello…I honestly believe you are just the type of team to beat carthage. Pass ..Pass..Pass..mix in some running. Exploiting the secondary one on one …or zone is where you have the equalizer to show case your abilities.Remember Carthage has alot of 2nd place finishes, because their WAS somone Better!! Go Okaw!!
the toughest competion isnt against an opponent…it is with oneself!!! Evaluate with honesty your own short comings, strive to adjust, correct or improve the problems, do what you do well,..consistantly and as they say…the rest will take care of itself…do these things and you will find success, …Grasshopper

If anyone is going to put together a game plan that will give a team a good chance to score points against Carthage, it will be Culley Welter and Monticello…..BUT……we have to be realistic about the Monticello defense. They have given up a huge number of points this year, and the Carthage offense is a beast. Camp Point in the 40’s, Unity in the 50’s…will Carthage be in the 60’s? My guess is yes. Regardless, it has been a great year for Monticello, and I have been happy for them. I am sure someone will break out the “David and Goliath” speech at some point.

  29. Trojan Gods says:
    November 5th, 2009 at 11:32 am

That is what everyone has been saying. They will have to win by a shoot out. They give up a lot points but they put up big points, too.

WCAZ (Carthage, IL) will be carrying the game on the internet Saturday if anyone is interested, I certainly am!

I believe just like all the rest of the games, Monticello has been carried by the Clinton Station WHOW, 95.9. I know they will be there, they anounced it last week at the game.

Coach Welter is the only coach to have a winning record agianst the Carthage Illini West team. Carthage is a beast, but their conference is horrid. Carthage wins, but not before getting a scare. I am betting on Welter and ball control this game to keep his defense as rested as possible and to keep Carthage off the field.

My earlier post was not a slam on Monticello. I have not seen them play. I am basing my opinion on the fact that Carthage is the BEST 3A team I have ever seen. I believe they will not just beat, but destroy every team, at least up to the semi-finals. I bet they win state.

This is not the same Jim Unruh coached team that Coach Welter had beaten at Aledo. This team can score from anywhere at anytime. They are so balanced on offense it is crazy, there special teams are good for at least 2 scores a game and their defense is good for about the same. You not only have to stop their offense, but their defense and special teams too! I haven’t even talked about the quarterback yet. Michael Lafferty coming into this game is 24-0 as a starter and has thrown ZERO interceptions in his 2 years of leading the offense. He should have been starting as a soph. but that job went to Unruh’s son.(That’s another story, for another day).

If you are coming to the game watch Stefen Flynn #34 at fullback! When he get’s the ball put the women and children to bed “cause it ain’t pretty! This guy looks to hit people and he will not go out of bounds. He missed 2 or 3 ganes this year with an ankle injury but is back 100%.

This game won’t be close and it will be a long drive back to Okaw country!
