Millikin professor in court facing additional child porn charges

DECATUR — A Millikin University physics professor on academic leave was informed in court Friday he will face nine more counts of alleged possession of child pornography.

John Askill, 64, pleaded innocent in January to one count of possession of child pornography, and he declined to comment on the matter at his Friday arraignment.

Askill made no formal plea on the additional charges Friday.

Possession of child pornography is a Class 3 felony punishable by probation or two to five years in prison.

Macon County State's Attorney Scott Rueter declined to comment on why additional charges were filed.

Millikin University employees discovered images on Askill's space on the university's computer network, and the university has cooperated fully with the investigation, said Bryan Marshall, Millikin media relations director.

The university notified the Decatur police Juvenile Investigations Unit in July of the computer images, which were found during a routine audit of university computers.

Interviews were conducted and evidence was developed to secure a search warrant for the offense of possession of child pornography. The search resulted in the seizure of computer hard drives, CD ROMs, numerous computer diskettes and printed material.

Askill, a British foreign national, has resided in this country since 1965. The U.S. Bureau of Immigration has listed him as a permanent resident alien. The British consul was notified by telephone of his arrest.

Askill is on academic leave that was arranged prior to the discovery of the computer images and was not scheduled to teach this academic year. Askill has taught at Millikin since at least 1966, according to listings in the university's faculty directory.

A preliminary hearing has been set for Askill on June 2.
