CARBON MONOXIDE LAW: Yes, there is one, and it says by Jan 1st. all Illinois homes must have carbon monoxide detectors as well as smoke detectors. It might be tough to enforce, but the penalty for not complying could be death.

HOME FOR CHRISTMAS: This year it wasn't the sand and the heat and the turmoil of war for Justin Gadberry. The Bronze Star holder, already a first lieutenant in the Army, was home for Christmas. But like others earning medal honors, Gadberry shifts credit off his shoulders to those under his command.

"I was the one awarded the medal for doing my job but it was my soldiers that made all those missions successful."

HUBBARD'S CUPBOARD: Old Mother Hubbard's cupboard might have been bare, but that's certainly not true of storage space used by her namesake at Macon Resources.

Indeed, on the day of a craft and bake sale earlier this month in the agency's lobby, employees of Hubbard's Cupboard were filling almost every nook and cranny with food for the following week as they baked cookies for the sale and prepared to serve hot dogs and chili for lunch.

HEALTHY CHILDREN COURSE: A discussion course is being held in Jan. and Feb. to help families understand how culture influences children, foster creativity in children and create meaningful family times and healthy environments for children. Sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship and the Decatur Audubon Society.

ON BUSINESS: A roundup of business happenings in Central Illinois.

RICHARD FAUST: profile on the band member of various local bands, including Sister Kate and the Illinois band, before releasing a solo album

NEW YEAR'S EVE: A list of New Year's Eve events in Decatur.

WICS/WRSP: WICS (Channel 20) and WRSP (Channel 55) have been cooperating on a nightly 9 p.m. local newscast since September 2006. WICS, an ABC affiliate, reports and produces the program from its offices, using its anchors and reporters, and WRSP, a Fox affiliate, broadcasts it.

BLEEPIN' AWARD: A Decatur man won second place in a Virgin Mobile and YouTube.com contest titled "Bleepin' Awesome" Award.

CULBERTSON: Brian Culbertson has decided to count his blessings rather than curse his fate.

Record company politics essentially buried his new Christmas release, and he's still recovering from his September tumble onstage at Millikin University. But he has plenty planned for 2007, including tour dates, a cruise, and a radio show.

CAIN COLUMN: Decatur native Steve Hunter may have been one of the most excited people in the world after a recent British court decision.

A supporting musician by trade, Hunter has contributed some memorable guitar to some seminal songs. A British court has ruled a keyboard player is entitled to co-writing credits for a song he played on well after it was composed.
