Lyricist will write your song

If you would like to say it with a song but lack the words or the music, a new Sullivan-based business is playing your tune.

"Say It With A Song" specializes in crafting custom songs, both words and music, for special occasions such as weddings, retirements or memorial services. It was launched in October by Kerri Frerichs, who has been singing and performing since she was a child.

A former high school track and cross country coach, Frerichs got started writing songs for Sullivan High School's graduation and the wedding of a former student and realized there could be a market for a professional lyricist.

"I've written songs in a week, but I usually tell brides to allow at least three to six months," Frerichs said. "That way, they are not stressed about it."

Her services start at $250. For that, the client gets a professionally-recorded CD, and there are different options where they can have an accompaniment tape or CD for someone else to sing the words or written music to do their own arrangements. Added bells and whistles, such as more instrumentation and harmonies, cost more, and clients can hire Frerichs to perform live at their event.

"Say It With A Song" can be reached at www.sayitwithasong.ath.cx or call 246-5529.

Xanadoo is officially online in Decatur.

The wireless Internet service has been operating in the city area for some months but declares its presence 3 p.m. Tuesday with a ribbon-cutting at its new store in Hickory Point Mall.

"We've built a wireless Internet network throughout Decatur, and that took quite a bit of work," said Jeff McElhiney, Xanadoo Decatur sales manager. "Everything is up and running now, and we've already got a few hundred customers."

The coverage area includes the city and reaches out to Forsyth, parts of Mount Zion and Long Creek. The service, which has operations in Texas and Oklahoma, arrived in Springfield in 2007.

Xanadoo says it uses state of the art "WiMAX" technology and its biggest advantage is convenience. "When you take home our modem, there are two cords to plug in, and you'll be online within 10 minutes," said McElhiney.

A mother and daughter combination has opened a bakery in Monticello.

Cakes by the Cup at 101 N. Market St. offers a variety of baked goods starting when its doors open in the morning.

Morning selections include cinnamon rolls, muffins, coffee cake and scones, said co-owner Tina Patrick, 43. Gourmet cupcakes and cakes are offered throughout the day.

To drink, Cakes by the Cup has a selection of coffee, hot tea, hot chocolate and juice.

Patrick and her daughter, Shandel Barclay, 21, have baked the desserts and still do for Montgomery's on the Square and Allerton Park.

"Cupcakes have always been her big love," Patrick said. "We decided to break off on our own. Monticello doesn't have a bakery."

The bakery has places to sit down, and when the weather is warm, a courtyard offers outdoor seating.

It is open 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. It's closed Sunday through Tuesday.

For more information, call 762-3020.
