My first memories were when
my mom, sister and I moved to an apartment above Greider’s Cafeteria.
Some of the places we went to eat were the Chuck Wagon Diner, The Surrey, Wooden
Shoe, Hi Hat, White Peak and Jackie Robinson’s.
We moved to Jasper Housing Project and a lot of us guys and gals would walk to
town to attend Stephen Decatur High School, where we would go to Kitner Gym and
watch the Running Reds play basketball. I also saw Chuck Berry in concert there.
Before, after school and on weekends, we would hang out and listen to the rocking
50s music at Wayside Inn, Walgreens, Chocolate Shop, Woolworth’s, Jackie
Robinson’s. While at these places we had chocolate Cokes, root beer floats,
also known as black cows, and some of us would even put peanuts in our Cokes.
At times we would go to Schaefer’s Lanes and Paul’s Bowl and watch
others bowl, go to Tozier’s Pool Hall to play a game of rotation, 9 ball,
pee pool or snooker. We also got to watch two local pool pros — Don Tozier
and Dale Hawkins — play match games and do trick shots. At times we would
stand outside at the cocktail lounge and listen to Boots Randolph, Big Row Hoffman
and others play.
Sometimes we would go to Regal Roller Rink to skate, see movies at the Avon and
Lincoln and some of us were members of the Roy Rogers Fan Club at the Alabama
Theater. Go to Bolay’s hobby shop for the newest model cars. We also would
use the Transfer House at Main and Main for a meeting place and catch a bus.
I also watched it being moved.
Can’t forget cashing in mom’s S&H green stamps for gifts at Stauber’s.
Downtown was a great place to shop and visit.

My mind goes back to 1941. We had no car, no money, but we
looked forward to going downtown on Sunday afternoon.
So after we got home from church and had lunch, we put
our daughter Donna in the baby buggy and we walked downtown. We lived on East
Leafland Street at that time. No, we didn’t go downtown to shop. We window
shopped. We walked up and down on both sides of Water and Main streets looking
in the windows.
When we finally did get an old car, we drove downtown,
parked and watched the people. That was real entertainment.
Then later on, when we really got prosperous, we got
an ice cream cone, sat in the car and watched the people.
It wasn’t too long after that, Harold went to
work at the Sears store downtown. He worked there for many, many years. Didn’t
make much money, but he went dressed up and looked like he had a million. Harold
met many wonderful people at Sears and he had a lot of good friends. He enjoyed
every minute of his working days at Sears.
