SULLIVAN Â ;- Tina Turner, Billy Idol and Mr. T all make a very '80s comeback in the Little Theater-On the Square's latest production, "The Wedding Singer," where piano key neckties and white-washed denim rule the stage.

The comedic love story, based on the 1998 Adam Sandler film, is reprised nicely in this fun musical where the costumes and set steal the show.

Even so, the performers are able to keep up with their retro outfits with some great singing performances and well-timed jokes that keep the audience laughing.

Saturated in bad perms and leather fringe circa 1985, wedding singer Robbie Hart loses faith in love and his profession when his fiancee abandons him at the altar. But he finds his way out of the dumps when he falls for friend Julia Sullivan. A series of miscommunications and Julia's cheating fiance complicate the story, but with the help of a few pop culture icon impersonators and a trip to Las Vegas, all is made right in the end.

The supporting roles of George, Holly and Sammy, played by Matt Munson, Marisha Wallace and Jeffrey Max, kept the audience laughing and helped the love story between the leading characters unfold smoothly.

The lovesick leads were played by real-life couple Michael and Jillian Zygo, whose real-life love brings some emotion to their roles. At times, the ups and downs of the love story are drowned out by the comedy, but in the end the Zygos were able to drive the love story home for the audience.

The plot unfolds in front of the simple but effective set that takes the audience down memory lane. Scene designer Noel Rennerfeldt hand-painted a collage of decades-old memories that include a Rubik's Cube, Devo, Pacman and even MacGyver.

It was a great backdrop for the costumes, which included the '80s power suit, puffy bridesmaid dresses and Michael Jackson's famous red-leather jacket and white glove. In all, the 19 cast members go through 250 costumes and 100 wigs during the production.

At times, the ensemble has trouble keeping their dance steps together and avoiding the garland that serves as a backdrop. The missteps distract from the performer in the spotlight, but then there were also times when the spotlight was nowhere to be found. A little more synchronicity and better lighting cues could improve the show, but all in all, it was an entertaining production that earned a standing ovation by the end.
