DECATUR - Clint Black and some international acts are on the schedule for the 2007-08 Performing Arts season at Millikin University's Kirkland Fine Arts Center.
Country singer Black will headline a show Friday, Oct. 5.
International acts include the Moscow Ballet, the Golden Acrobats of China and a children's choir from Africa.
The season opens Sept. 11 with a special 9/11 commemoration in Rik Reppe's "Staggering Toward America," scheduled for two performances in Albert Taylor Theatre.
The one-man show is based on Reppe's post-9/11 quest to find what it means to be an American. Feeling disconnected and uncertain what he was supposed to do after the attacks, Reppe walked away from a lucrative management consulting business and embarked on an eight-week tour of the country including the Pentagon, the World Trade Center and the fatal field in western Pennsylvania. Along the road, he talked to hundreds of people hoping to find out what America is.
On Dec. 15, Kirkland will once again present the Moscow Ballet's "Nutcracker" with the Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra.
Feb. 15 is the Golden Acrobats of China, part of Kirkland's family series. The show combines acrobatics, traditional dance, spectacular costumes, ancient and contemporary music and theatrical techniques.
Jon Faddis and his Chicago Jazz Ensemble play will play Feb. 17. The Chicago Jazz Ensemble is recognized internationally as one of American's leading jazz ensembles. Since 1965, the group has remained dedicated to preserving the innovative tradition of American big-band jazz.
On Feb. 23, the Aquila Theatre Company will present "Catch 22."
The African Children's Choir will perform April 4 as part of Kirkland's Family Series.
April 10 is the scheduled date for a performance by the U.S. Army Band, conducted by Millikin alumnus Col. Thomas Rotondi. This is event is free, and tickets will be provided at the Kirkland Box Office.
On Earth Day, April 22, the center host will host the James W. Moore Lecture featuring environmentalist John Cronin.
The focus on the environment includes a Family Series presentation by the Discovery Planet's Jeff Corwin on April 26.
The annual Vespers concert will be performed Dec. 1 and 2, and the symphonic band will perform a patriotic tribute concert, "An American Salute," on Sunday, Oct. 14, with Rotondi as guest conductor.
Season brochures for Kirkland will go out in early July. Individual ticket sales begin Aug. 13.
