That summer sun and sweltering heat mean it's time for lazy picnics, visits from the ice cream man (or woman) and leisurely dips in local swimming pools. It's also time for cryptosporidiosis, shigellosis and giardiasis, diseases caused by nasty microorganisms that can be lurking in those pools.
Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Damon T. Arnold's office issued a news release focusing on a different side of swimming pool safety. Aside from making sure all those headed into the water are strong and safe swimmers, it's important to avoid getting sick. Arnold offered some tips on making sure swimming turns out to be an enjoyable experience all around.
Shower before swimming, and make sure youngsters have had their baths and wash their hands after using the restroom. Parents and caretakers of young children should incorporate a series of regular bathroom breaks into pool and water park outings. Change diapers in designated areas to avoid contamination of the swimming area, the release stated.
Those with diarrhea, especially children in diapers, should avoid swimming in public pools, according to the department. Even those who follow all safety precautions can face danger if the pool is contaminated by others. Teach children not to swallow swimming pool water or get it in their mouths.
The release also offered tips on how to identify whether a facility is keeping up with pool cleaning, performing the appropriate chemical treatments and monitoring water quality.
The water should be clear and the sides of the pool clean and smooth. Patrons can ask for water quality reports or test the water themselves to make sure the chlorine and pH are at adequate levels. Readings should be about one to four parts per million for chlorine and 7.2 to 7.8 for pH, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.
