WINDSOR - A Stewardson-Strasburg sixth-grader bested all challengers, including his older sister, Friday to win the Shelby County Spelling Bee.

Tristan Mummel correctly spelled "burrito" to take the championship and advance to the Herald and Review Regional Spelling Bee at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 15, in Kaeuper Hall at Millikin University.

"Pretty good when you consider I don't like to eat them," he said after being named champion.

Tristan's sister, Kayla, a Stewardson-Strasburg eighth-grader left the bee earlier after misspelling another food item, "spaghetti." Alex Russell, an eighth-grader from Cowden-Herrick, finished second.

"I missed matinee," she said.

The spelling siblings worked with their mother, Kathy Mummel, to learn the spelling words before the meet.

"Spelling is a 'mom' thing," said their father, George Mummel. "I'm not that good at it."

Students from Cowden-Herrick, Stewardson-Strasburg and Windsor participated in the bee.
