CERRO GORDO - At first, the Cerro Gordo High School post-prom committee was a bit worried that Kitty the Cow wouldn't cooperate in their Willie Bingo quest.

Kitty created a cow patty before the grid was finished.

But there's always more where that came from, and at precisely 10:10 a.m. Friday, Kitty obligingly made another deposit, only moments after she'd been turned loose on the grid in an empty lot owned by Gene Timmerman of Cerro Gordo.

The winners are Lisa Dilbeck and Kelley Larrick, who share $1,000.

To raise money for post-prom, said Becky Songer, a member of the committee, parents and students do all sorts of things, including bagging groceries for tips to this activity, dubbed "Willie Bingo" by a committee member. The committee sold 300 tickets for $10 each, then painted a grid on Timmerman's lot along South Street and, thanks to a computer program, assigned each square in random order to a ticket number.

"Post-prom gets $2,000," Songer said. "Last year, we sold 200 squares and gave $500 away."

Plans are still under way for post-prom, but costs will include a deejay and food and beverages.

Kitty, owned by Curt and Louanne Krause, contentedly munched grass but rejected the apple slices offered to her. After she completed her assigned task, she stayed in the lot until after the homecoming parade.

"Last year, we did it with Farm Day at the end of school," Songer said. "This year, we decided we'd do it up here so people could come. Nobody was at the school (last year) except for the kids."

Songer and Cris Perry, who was in charge of watching Kitty while the grid was being laid out, have seniors at Cerro Gordo this year. It's bittersweet to be planning their last post-prom, Perry said.

"The bonfire (Thursday) night was fun," Perry said. "When you're going, you're thinking you're glad it's your last one, but once I got there and started taking pictures of everybody, I thought, 'It's my last one!' "
