DECATUR - Detectives investigating a shooting incident in Decatur announced Monday they had one man in custody on attempted murder charges and have also made several additional arrests.

The 20-year-old suspect was booked on charges of attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was further charged with possession of cannabis and possession with intent to deliver after police executed a search warrant early Monday at a house in the 2400 block of East Main Street.

The suspect is accused of gunning down Decatur man Adrian Hopson, 21, who was found at about 10:10 p.m. lying in the parking lot of JB's Liquor store at 1120 E. Wood St. Hopson was rushed to St. Mary's Hospital, where police said he came out of surgery later Monday and was in "stable condition."

Lt. David Dickerson said information uncovered by police "regarding the shooter's activities" led detectives to return to the parking lot in the early hours of Sunday, where a car pulled into the lot and stopped in the exact spot the shooting had taken place.

In a sworn statement, police explained what happened next: "The passenger door of the Buick opened, and the (male) occupant of the passenger front seat appeared to be looking on the ground for something from his seated position," the statement said.

"¦ Upon viewing the right side of the front seat passenger, Sgt. (Cody) Moore observed the grip of a pistol to be sticking out of the (passenger's) waist band. ¦ The gun was a Ruger .357-caliber revolver found to be loaded with five live rounds."

The 19-year-old passenger, who allegedly told police he was a member of a street gang known as the "City Squad," was arrested at 2:25 a.m. on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. A subsequent check found the gun to have been stolen in Decatur in 2006, and the passenger was also booked for possession of a stolen firearm.

A rear seat passenger in the car, another 19-year-old male, allegedly lied to police about his real name after being asked several times. He was booked for obstructing justice and also charged with illegal consumption of alcohol.

All three suspects were being held in the Macon County Jail as police investigations continue.

Dickerson said there were many potential witnesses in the liquor store parking lot when the shooting happened. "Those persons are needed to come forward and cooperate with the investigation," he added.
