DECATUR - In the second day of the murder trial of Brandon R. Shaw, the prosecution presented circumstantial evidence collected by detectives at the crime scene.
Randy Chaney, a Decatur police detective at the time of the shooting of Marcelle J. Brown, 28, testified on the content of a video he shot and accompanying photographs.
Prosecutors allege that Shaw, 26, killed Brown on June 30, 2008, because of a feud over a woman.
Chaney explained that the images showed several bullet holes found in the exterior of a house at 1300 block of East Main Street, several 9 mm Winchester shell casings found on the street and a bullet fragment found in the grass. The casings and fragment were identified by markers.
The video also showed a trail of blood, which led from the Main Street house, through a wooded lot containing blood spots on leaves, to the alley between Main Street and Prairie Avenue. In the alley, there was a mattress that contained a fresh blood stain on its edge, as well as some bloody clothes a few feet away.
"The clothing was removed from the victim prior to transfer by ambulance," Chaney said.
Brown bled to death after a bullet severed a femoral artery in his thigh.
Beside the holes in the house, there were two bullet holes in an SUV parked in the driveway.
Chaney said one of the holes, at the corner of the house, appeared to be an "exit wound." When defense attorney Randy Baker questioned him as to why he thought so, he noted the roughness of the edges but said he was not an expert in that field.
Detective Cory Barrows testified that he found a spent 9 mm shell casing in a front yard on East Main Street on July 2, two days after the shooting. There were four shell casings found in the street on the night of the shooting.
Assistant State's Attorney Jay Scott said he hopes to wrap up the prosecution's case today. Judge Lisa Holder White said the trial may go as late as 5:30 p.m. today, so that the jurors will not be kept late Thursday, before the Fourth of July weekend. The trial resumes at 9 a.m. today in courtroom 6A.
