DECATUR - A 31-year-old man was arrested, after an alert man saw someone breaking into his neighbor's apartment during the noon hour Monday.
Police quickly arrived in the area and found the man matching the neighbor's description of the burglar. The burglary, during which cash and coins were taken, occurred on the 600 block of West Main Street.
"He gave a very accurate description," Decatur Police Sgt. Steve Chabak said.
The witness was later asked to identify the 31-year-old man, who was charged with residential burglary and possession of burglary tools.
"The officers found items taken from the apartment," Chabak said, adding the man also had tools allegedly used to gain entry to households.
Several other burglaries were reported Monday and Tuesday, according to police, including a break-in at Aaron's Rental, 875 E. Pershing Road.
At 2:55 a.m. Tuesday, two men pulled up to the store, according to police. They left their vehicle, smashed a window, grabbed a 32-inch Magnavox TV set and drove away.
Chabak said a surveillance video shows that there were two men involved in this crime. The police are investigating.
Early Monday, a resident of the 500 block of West Packard Street reported that he lost many items, including a fireproof safe filled with valuables, in a burglary which occurred the previous night.
Among the items were a 50-inch flat screen TV, other smaller flat screen TV sets, two diamond rings, one with five and one with six diamonds and a DVD player.
