She won a silver medal and received a special birthday song from the Millikin University women's basketball team. This all occurred at the Central Illinois Special Olympics Indoor Basketball Skill competition.

DECATUR - Matt Arbogast says the formula for success is simple.

"You got to practice," he explained Sunday. "Practice, practice, practice."

It certainly works for him. Competing in the Special Olympics Indoor Basketball Skills Competition at Millikin University's Griswold Center, Arbogast came away with a gleaming gold medal. He now goes on to the state finals in March at Illinois State University in Normal.

"Practice," added the 22-year-old Arbogast, "makes perfect."

But the coolest thing about Special Olympics is you can win without claiming the top awards. Arbogast came to Sunday's competition via special recreation activities run by the Decatur Park District. Two fellow players who joined him were Tyler Scott, 17, and 55-year-old Susan Clark, who got a fifth place ribbon and a silver medal, respectively.

"I know that with Tyler, it's all about the fun of just being able to participate and being here with his friends," said his mom, Cheryl, 41, cheering on her son from the bleachers. "That's the big thing for him."

Clark was busy celebrating her birthday, as well as that nice shiny medal and couldn't imagine a nicer way to spend her special day. "It's very exciting," she said. "I meet a lot of friends here, including my boyfriend."

The event drew 54 competitors, from 14 to 60, who came from Christian, Moultrie and Macon counties and easily topped last year's overall entry of 36. Everybody, including coaches and parents, got a lunch provided by the Knights of Columbus Council 577, who also sponsored the medals and awards. The Millikin women's basketball team helped with organization and gave every award winner their own personal cheerleading section as they stepped up to receive the honors.

"The women's basketball team is a big part of our event," said Joanie Keyes, area director for Special Olympics Area 10. "And our players just love being here. They've been practicing for this since October, and this is the reward for all their effort and hard work."
