DECATUR -Land of Lincoln Credit Union again is the target of an Internet phishing attack, this time disguised as an effort to improve the online security of the institution because of bogus e-mails its members received earlier this year.

The latest e-mails are an effort to get members to divulge account information that could be used in attempts to siphon money from their accounts and should be disregarded, according to credit union officials.

The phony e-mail requests state, "To enhance the security when accessing your online accounts, Land of Lincoln Credit Union has implemented an additional layer to our online security system. You may be requested to answer security questions in order to complete your log in to Land of Lincoln Credit Union Online Banking."

When the e-mail recipient clicks on the address given, the first item to pop up is a request for an account number.

"The place you do business with asking you for your account information is something that will never happen," said Todd Hogan, Land of Lincoln vice president of operations.

The credit union is turning the latest phishing e-mail over to its Internet provider so the site from which they are being sent can be shut down, Hogan said.

"I've gotten at least one of these types of e-mails every week for the past two years," Hogan said. "They just won't give up."
