Moweaqua Foods is under new ownership.
The village's only grocery store was taken over Sept. 8 by Tim Smith and his wife, Mary, who plan to make a few improvements but keep everything that has made the business on Main Street a retail hub for the community.
"Only fools change things drastically, especially right off the bat," Tim Smith said. "And what we've got here is working very well."
The business was formerly owned and run by Bob Peadro and his son, Daric, who built the store up with a series of popular improvements: hot deli lunch service, pizza, ice cream and dessert counter, movie rentals and expanded product lines of all kinds.
Tim Smith is familiar with how well it all works because, for the last six years, he's worked at the store as the night manager while also working as a graphic artist and salesman for a newspaper. "Four years ago, I asked Bob, if he decided to sell, to give me a chance at it," Tim Smith said. "This year, he said he was interested, and so we worked from there and put it all together."
Smith said he likes working local retail because, like Moweaqua Foods itself, it's got a little bit of everything. "You go from working on computers to the meat room to groceries; you're just all over the place," he added. "And I like a lot of variety in what I do."
