Well, you can rock it you can roll it, you can stop and you can stroll it at the hop - the new car hop at Debbie's Diner, that is.
The Decatur restaurant at 1404 N. 22nd St. has introduced a car hop service where the waitress comes out to your car and hangs a tray on the windows, just like it was when Danny and the Juniors topped the charts in 1957.
Debbie Hill, who runs the diner, has golden memories of the car hops when she was a girl and hopes to enhance her business by serving up some pure nostalgia. "We'll have '50s music and specials like our hand-breaded mushrooms and onion rings, hamburger horseshoes and home-made desserts and soft-serve ice-cream," said Hill, 54. "It's going to be a fun thing."
Hill, who owns a '56 Ford Thunderbird, says customers don't have to have a classic ride, but it's the perfect eating spot if out cruising in vintage tin. The car hop service is open 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Regular restaurant hours are 4:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. Call 423-4130 for details.
The only sad note is the girls who serve you won't be on roller skates. "That's the way it's supposed to be, but you can't get insurance," said Hill.
Hav-U-Ate? is serving up Southern food with a twist at 495 N. 22nd St. in Decatur. A catering menu also is available.

Budding Michelangelos and Leonardo Da Vincis can brush up on their art skills at Pilar's Creative Art Lessons, based in Decatur.
The art school has been around for five years but has recently been taken over by Debbi Foster, an interior designer who studied art under the school's former owner, Pilar Stenger. Foster says Stenger, who drew and colored for the Walt Disney company, will continue to teach with the business, which is accepting new students. Whether you don't know one end of a pencil from the other or have some art training, Foster says there is a lesson package that's right for you.
"The way we teach is the way Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci did all of their work," she added. "And we teach realistic ways of shading and coloring that nobody else in Central Illinois teaches."
Art classes begin with basic drawing techniques and move on from there, the cost being $40 or $70 for a month's instruction, depending on whether you supply the materials or the school does. For more information, call 672-8422 or 972-4621.
