DOWNS - It could be two weeks before all four lanes of Interstate 74 are open after Saturday's fatal tanker wreck damaged the Kickapoo Creek bridge west of Downs.

Traffic that had been backed up for hours following the crash lightened after the opening of one eastbound lane about midnight Saturday, Heyworth Mayor Steve Crum said.

All westbound traffic has been rerouted to U.S. 136 and U.S. 51, through Heyworth. Eastbound I-74 is reduced to one lane near the Kickapoo Creek bridge, said Mike Claffey, Illinois Department of Transportation spokesman.

Department officials and engineers were assessing damage to the bridge Sunday, where a westbound gasoline tanker truck rolled over and caught fire, killing the driver. No one else was injured.

But it may be weeks before travel times are back to normal, Claffey said.

Claffey said department workers and Illinois State Police will alert travelers about the detour where U.S. 51 and 136 intersect.

"We are going to be out there especially during heavy traffic, and we understand that it's going to be an inconvenience," he said. "We are just trying to put the message out there that they should try to avoid it."

Bloomington altered its stoplight cycle to accommodate the extra traffic on its southeast edge. But Bloomington police Sgt. Clay Wheeler said traffic lightened Sunday and was not an issue.

McLean County Coroner Beth Kimmerling tentatively identified the driver of the truck as Ralph Lowell Kolbus, 71, of Mattoon. Kimmerling said final confirmation of the driver's identity could take three days to two weeks.
