SPRINGFIELD - Democratic congressional candidate Colleen Callahan has asked for an investigation into whether her opponent, Republican Aaron Schock, committed official misconduct as a notary public seven years ago.
Schock and Callahan are running for the 18th District seat held by Republican Rep. Ray LaHood, who is retiring.
The Associated Press reported Tuesday that Schock notarized tax shelter documents for his father with inaccurate dates. The documents were dated Jan. 1, 2000, but weren't signed for nearly a year.
The information came out in a July trial in which Schock's father was testifying as a victim of a scam.
Callahan went on the attack Wednesday, saying a notary backdating documents could be an official misconduct misdemeanor, and Peoria County State's Attorney Kevin Lyons should investigate.
Callahan called it "yet another example of questionable judgment" by Schock.
Lyons didn't return a call for comment.
Schock said Wednesday he didn't specifically recall the documents in question but called it a "clerical error" and "mistake." He sought to downplay Callahan's attacks as merely political.
"She hasn't made a case for why she needs to be elected," Schock said.
Callahan's call comes as campaign finance data released Wednesday showed Schock with hefty financial advantage in the race. He's raised $671,581 in the last three months and had $466,301 remaining as of Sept. 30.
A lot of his fundraising came from a Peoria visit from President Bush. Schock spent more than a half-million dollars in the last three months and has been airing ads to promote his views on several issues.
Callahan raised $166,689 and had $53,168 remaining as of Sept. 30. She has aired television ads sharply critical of Schock.
Green Party candidate Sheldon Schafer pulled in about $7,000, he said, and spent about $6,000 of it.
