When this West End bar opened in 1977, it didn't include food or entertainment.

That began to change some nine month's later when new owners Jim and Kathy Gresham took over.

Today, it is a popular dining establishment and is a five-time winner of the Herald & Review's Readers Choice award for best to watch live music. In addition to its regular line-up of weekend shows, summertime patrons can hear Blues artist Billy Galt perform on the patio on Wednesday nights. During the cooler months, patrons can enjoy jazz on Saturday afternoons.

The business also is a regular on the Readers Choice best bar list.

Appealing to a diverse crowd always has been one the couple's goals.

"Like every small retailer, we value our base of regular customers and continually try to reach new ones," said Jim Gresham, who left a promising career in the banking industry to pursue his childhood dream of owning a bar. "It's a very competitive market, and we must adapt to changes while maintaining the 'character' that has provided our longevity."

One of the first changes the couple made, which helped generate a daytime business, was the addition of food, served out of a kitchen described as being the size of a walk-in closet. The business soon grew to include an adjacent building, providing more space for a kitchen and for patrons to enjoy the live music, comedy shows and watching sports.

The menu has grown over the years to include more than 90 items, the most popular being their nachos, salads such as the Chicken Spinach Strawberry Salad, specialty sandwiches such as the Black Forest (roast beef, Colby cheese, bacon and tomato on pumpernickel bread) and the turkey melt. The soups are homemade daily.
