DECATUR - Shutouts by St. Teresa and Warrensburg-Latham in Thursday's Okaw Valley Conference soccer tournament semifinals set up a Bulldogs-Cardinals final for the sixth straight year.
In St. Teresa's 2-0 win over Monticello, Brennan McElroy and Kevin Yoon scored for the Bulldogs (9-2), and Matt Kaufman controlled the game defensively.
"(Kaufman) was all over the field, getting the ball out and keeping them from getting a shot on goal," St. Teresa coach Leo Berger said. "It was a very technical game. We did a good job of disrupting their passes."
Warrensburg-Latham played Monticello for the second time in the past two weeks and beat the Hawks 7-0 behind three goals from Cody Drew.
Also for the Cardinals (8-1-1), Kyle Mason scored twice and had an assist. Austin Cearlock and Mohamed Elrakawy found the net as well.
"We controlled the game offensively and defensively," Warrensburg coach Kevin Emery said. "We really put the clamp on them tonight. On defense, we recognized Jackson Riggen as their top option. He's got some speed and we tried to match him with some speed of our own. Things just went our way and worked."
Last year, Warrensburg's 2-0 win over St. Teresa in the tournament finals was the highlight of the Cardinals' season. It was also their fifth win in a row over the Bulldogs in the tournament finals.
"It's always a good game," Emery said. "It'll be interesting to see how it plays out."
Berger said the formula the Bulldogs will use to break Warrensburg's run won't be complicated.
"We just need to play our game and score," he said.
